Eugene, OR — Skipping Stones Magazine and the 2022 Oregon Asian Celebration invite students of all ages to create and submit their best nature Haiku and Tanka (Japanese poetry forms by May 5, 2022.

All student entries should be ready for display. Haiku or Tanka should be on either 11” x 17” or 8.5” x 11” paper.

Chosen entries will be exhibited at the 2022 riverfront Oregon Asian Celebration & Obon Taiko Drumming Festival planned for July 30, at Alton Baker Park. All entries will be considered for publication on Skipping Stones’ website. For students whose haiku, tanka, or nature art is published by Skipping Stones Magazine, they will receive a complimentary copy of the summer 2022 issue.

Haiku and Tanka (short song, in Japanese) are both traditional poetry forms that come from Japan.

  • Haiku consists of three lines. The first line and third line both have five syllables and the middle line has seven (But we will not be very strict).
  • Haiku appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) and touch the heart.
  • Tanka is a 31-syllable poem and has 5 lines with 5/7/5/7/7 syllable count, respectively.
  • Nature Art can accompany your haiku or Tanka, and it is also encouraged.

 

All entries must include (preferably on the backside) the student’s full name and grade level, the name of the student’s teacher and school name, the school’s name, the teacher’s email address, and a mailing address. 

Haiku entries must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 5, 2022, by 5:00 p.m. at the Skipping Stones Magazine office by mail or electronically.

Mail entries can be addressed to P. O. Box 3939, Eugene, OR 97403. The street address is 166 W. 12th Avenue, Eugene, Oregon 97401 (the Odd Fellows Building on the corner of 12th Ave. & Charnelton St. in Eugene).

Electronic submissions can be sent as a HiRez PDF, jpeg, or tiff files that include artwork along with the haiku and Tanka. Haiku and Tanka without art can e sent as a part of the email text or attached as a Microsft Word document .doc or docx file.
