All ages are invited to learn Japanese Obon (pronounced O-bone) dances in July at Sheldon Community Center in time for the July 30th Oregon Asian Celebration and Obon & Taiko Festival at Alton Baker Park.
The Obon folk dances are easy to learn and students are welcome to join the Obon concentric circle dances at the festival planned for Saturday, July 30th at Alton Baker Park.
Drop-in classes are held every Thursday in July from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m, on July 18 and 25. Just show up and dance!
The Obon dances are traditional Japanese American folk dances performed at festivals to honor one’s ancestors and to celebrate a sense of community. All ages can learn these easy dances performed with hand motions, fans, hats, and other accessories.
